I would also like to see a post like this that covers some of the reasons people DON'T become doulas, and your rebuttals for those (for instance, being worried about always being on-call, the long, hard hours, etc.) Bershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03587147948259795325noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5186597747141068105.post-69685174967913743312014-03-25T00:27:14.898-04:002014-03-25T00:27:14.898-04:00Im really confused, im from sydney australia and a...Im really confused, im from sydney australia and all the doula courses ive looked at are about $5000! My biggest piece of advice is just to remember how important your supportive presence is to clients...often new doulas are very oriented towards "doing", but as you get more experienced you will feel more comfortable and appreciate the value of "being" with the woman. Sometimes that is all she needs! Good luck!Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02589949170980959443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5186597747141068105.post-8633049906814237372011-09-03T21:06:51.346-04:002011-09-03T21:06:51.346-04:00Hi Rebecca,

It is one of the favorite things I have done!

I am now signed up for Lactation Educator training in Oct and am excited to be better able to support moms in breastfeeding.Enjoy Birthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13227246774801636777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5186597747141068105.post-24277464720832116212009-09-08T00:33:43.001-04:002009-09-08T00:33:43.001-04:00Hi Hillary! It is definitely not a faux pas in my book to contact other doulas in your area to talk about backing you up. That is more potential clients for them (if you do end up needing to call them in) and says that you respect them and would like to work with them.

Two more ideas:
Is there a doula listserv in your area? Then you could just e-mail out to everyone saying "Hey, I'm looking for back-ups" and see who responds.

Are you on alldoulas.com? That's a place where you can get a lot of doula-related advice, and you might even find local doulas there too.Rebeccahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02589949170980959443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5186597747141068105.post-89560495273492952752009-09-07T22:21:10.699-04:002009-09-07T22:21:10.699-04:00This post is really encouraging to me. None of the women who took the course with me are particularly local. Any advice for how to get over this hurdle? Should I just contact other doulas in my city to ask if they might want to be backup for my clients, or is that a new doula faux pas?hillaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18022210696704550291noreply@blogger.com
